Here are some of the things you can do to help your child learn…
Write at Home

Have Child Tell Their StoryHave your child âÂÂtellâ their story orally. âÂÂIf they can say it, they can write itâÂÂ. -
Write about Everyday LifeHave your child write stories about their everyday life (trips to the store, what they did over the weekend, having a friend over etc.). -
Have Child Illustrate StoriesHave children draw pictures that match their stories. -
Stretch Out WordsHave students âÂÂstretchâ out words that are difficult to spell so they can hear all the sounds: Example: Stamp (st-am-p) -
Include Dialogue within StoriesHave students include dialogue within their story: Example: Mom said, âÂÂplease go clean your room.â -
Reread WritingChild should reread their writing to make sure it makes sense. -
Use Mentor TextsMentor texts are pieces of literature that you can return to and reread for many different purposes. Texts are read aloud to students and discussed. They are then used to help teach the objectives in the mini lessons. Suggested Mentor Texts: Veggie Monster
Connect with the School
Your child’s teacher is available to answer questions about your child’s progress and what they are learning in class. Be sure to attend conferences, contact your child’s teacher via email, notes, and/or phone calls. Attend school events (i.e., Open House, Parent Math Night, etc.), as well. Review any work that comes home (corrected papers, classwork or homework) to see what your child is working on in class. Keep the lines of communication open. Email or call the teacher when you have questions.
