Here are some of the things you can do to help your child learn…
  1. Find Word Problems in Real Life
Find Word Problems in Real Life
Look for real life “word problems” at home. For example: When planning a garden, how much soil will you need to fill an area?
  2. Measure Objects
    Measure Objects
Have your child measure objects around your home using different forms of customary and metric units of length. Measure the height of their family members and convert inches into feet by dividing by 12. Discuss the appropriate unit of measurement for different objects.
  3. Look at Maps
    Look at Maps
Look at maps that show specific landmarks and use the guide to find them.
Connect with the School
Your child's teacher is available to answer questions about your child'€™s progress and what they are learning in class.  Be sure to attend conferences, contact your child'€™s teacher via email, notes, and/or phone calls. Attend school events (i.e., Open House, Parent Math Night, etc.), as well. Review any work that comes home (corrected papers, classwork or homework) to see what your child is working on in class.
Keep an open line of communication with your child’s teacher. Questions to ask your child’s teacher:

  • Can you show me examples of student work that meets the learning goals?
  • How can I help support my child at home?
  • If my child is struggling, what kind of support can you provide?
  • Where is my child excelling? How can I support this success?
