  • Be a part of a community of readers (how to work together to become better readers).

  • Set  and reach reading stamina goals (20-30 minutes of independent reading per day).

  • Develop fluency (fast and accurate word recognition), comprehension (understanding), word solving (using strategies to read single words), reading like a writer and making reading-writing connections.

  • Be a part of a community of writers (how to work together to become better writers).

  • Write stories taken from a small moment in students'€™ lives.

  • Use writing checklist to assess their writing and set goals for themselves.

​Math
  • Solve one or two step word problems (add/subtract within 100) using strategies (example: At the school store, a pencil costs 35 cents, and a sticker costs 20 cents less. How much do a pencil and a sticker cost together?)

  • Learn addition and subtraction facts for numbers up to 20

  • Read many books on a variety of topics

  • Monitor reading to correct errors that affect understanding.  

  • Begin reading informational books and text to learn how writers communicate facts and ideas effectively.  

  • Learn that books teach us how ideas are organized in print

  • Understand that the digits in 3-digit numbers represent groups of hundreds, tens and ones (place value)
    • example: 235 is 2 hundreds, 3 tens, and 5 ones

  • Easily and accurately add and subtract numbers to 20

Writing
  • Write lab reports & science books.

  • Write using the language of scientists to demonstrating skills in communicating about scienc topics. 

  • Use the Information Writing Checklist to check their own work.

  • Join Book Clubs in class with other students to read and compare characters, stories, and authors' craft across books.

  • Examine books and text for how author's word choice, figurative language, punctuation, and patterns affect understanding and quality. 

Writing

  • Write to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of letter writing and defending a claim blending opinion persuasive ideas and evidence.  

  • Write persuaseive essays.

  • Estimate length and measure an object by using a ruler, yardstick, meter stick, and measuring tape
